How to Pass CCAO-F
A preparation sequence built around the scaled pass mark, the two-minute average, and the retake ladder you would rather not need.

Passing means reaching 720 on a scale that runs from 100 to 1000, over 60 questions in 120 minutes. The plan that gets you there has four moving parts: a cold diagnostic before you revise anything, study sequenced by how many marks each domain carries, practice questions mined for their explanations rather than their scores, and a pacing routine you have rehearsed before the day.
Begin with the awkward fact about the scoring. The threshold is scaled and criterion-referenced, and no conversion from questions-correct to scaled score has been published. Anyone telling you that 43 right will do it, or that you need 72%, is guessing. The strategic consequence matters: you cannot budget for a domain you intend to fail, because you have no way to calculate the slack you are carrying. The only safe target is competence everywhere, with real strength where the weights are heaviest.
The second thing to accept early is that this is not a recall test. There is no syntax to memorise, no parameter table, no architecture to draw. Every item drops a professional into a situation and asks what the actual problem is. That changes how you prepare. Reading the material twice is far less useful than working through situations and being able to state, before you look at the options, what you would do and why.
What follows is the sequence we would run, in order, with the exam-day mechanics at the end.
The short version
- Two minutes per question on average: work in three passes rather than answering strictly in order.

Sit a diagnostic before you revise anything
Do this first, before opening any study material. Sixty questions under time, cold, scored by domain. It will be uncomfortable, and that is the point: you are buying a map, not a grade.
Cold diagnostics work here because confidence and competence come apart badly on this paper. Heavy daily users of Claude regularly lose marks in Output Evaluation and Validation, since fluent habits and rigorous verification are not the same skill, while people who have never run an implementation lose them in Workflow Integration. You cannot predict your own profile reliably, and guessing wrong costs you a week.
Score per domain, then weight the gaps. Fifty per cent in an area worth 21% of the exam is a much larger problem than fifty per cent in one worth 10%, so your order should follow the product of gap and weight rather than the gap alone.
For every item you got wrong, write the reason in one line. Not the correct answer, the reason. Across sixty questions you will typically find three or four recurring patterns rather than sixty separate holes, and those patterns are what you actually revise.

What a scaled 720 means for your strategy
The bar is 720 on a 100 to 1000 range. What matters tactically is what that number does not tell you.
Scaled scoring here is criterion-referenced, meaning your result reflects performance against a fixed standard rather than against other candidates, and the raw-to-scaled conversion is not published for this exam. There is no official statement of how many of the 60 items you must get right. We will not invent one, and you should be sceptical of anyone who quotes you a figure.
Three consequences follow.
First, do not plan around sacrificing an area. Without a published conversion you cannot compute your margin, so a deliberate weak spot is an unmeasured risk rather than a managed one.
Second, treat every item as carrying the same value as every other, because within the paper they do. Domain weights describe how many questions come from each area, not how much an individual question is worth. A brutal governance scenario and a straightforward configuration item count identically, which means five minutes agonising over one hard question is five minutes taken from two you would have answered correctly.
Third, aim to clear the line comfortably in practice rather than to touch it. If your practice results hover at the threshold you have no headroom for an unfamiliar phrasing, an awkward question set, or a slow start on the day.
Sequence the syllabus by marks at stake
Revise in whatever order your diagnostic dictates. Where it comes out flat, let the weights decide.
Output Evaluation and Validation is 21% and deserves the largest slice of your hours regardless. Its content is also the most transferable: the discipline of asking what would genuinely settle a claim reappears in governance scenarios and again in diagnostic questions.
Workflow Integration at 16% and Governance at 15% come next. Both reward rehearsal over reading. For each situation, say your answer aloud before looking at the options: where is the constraint, who stays accountable, what happens on the bad day.
Prompting and Task Execution at 14% sits fourth. Daily use puts you at a reasonable baseline already, and the marks you are dropping are usually about briefing rather than wording.
Product and Model Selection and Configuration and Knowledge Management, 12% each, are the two you can genuinely learn from a page of notes. Web search against extended thinking against research, and instructions against knowledge against the request: get those two distinctions exact and you have secured most of 24% of the paper.
Troubleshooting and Optimization at 10% goes last, because its diagnostic layers recycle everything above.
On a compressed timetable, protect the first two blocks and let the last one shrink. Losing preparation on a 10% area is survivable. Losing it on a 21% area is not.
Use practice questions for the explanations
The common mistake is treating a question bank as a score generator. The score is nearly worthless. The explanations are the entire product.
Work like this. Read the situation and decide your answer before you read the options. This is the single highest-yield habit for a judgement exam, because it stops the options doing your thinking for you and it exposes the questions where you had no view at all, which are the ones you most need to study.
Then read every explanation, including for options you rejected. Knowing why a wrong answer is wrong is the part that generalises. On this paper the wrong answers arrive in recognisable families: the prompt tweak that treats a symptom, the extra step that imitates verification without adding evidence, the solution proposed before anyone has looked at where the time goes, the correction repeated more firmly.
Keep a running list of the families you personally fall for. Most people have two or three, and they recur across domains.
Do not attempt to memorise questions. Any bank worth using, ours included, writes items against the published guide rather than recalling them from real sittings, so the wording you practise on will not be the wording you meet. What transfers is the reasoning pattern, which is the thing worth drilling.
Pacing 60 questions across 120 minutes
Two minutes per item on average, and that is more generous than it sounds for a paper with no code to read and no diagrams to decode. Most items here are a short workplace situation followed by a set of options.
Run it in three passes.
On the first pass, answer everything you are sure of and keep moving. Aim to reach the last question with roughly half an hour in hand. Do not let one difficult governance scenario consume six minutes on the way through: flag it and go.
On the second pass, return to the flagged items with the clock in view. Some will look easier now, occasionally because a later question reminded you of a distinction you had forgotten.
On the third pass, spend whatever remains on the ones still open, and make sure every item has an answer recorded. An empty box cannot earn anything, whereas a considered elimination down to two candidates is a much better position.
One discipline costs nothing and pays well: when you first read a scenario, identify what type of question it is before evaluating anything. Is it asking what to verify, where accountability sits, which surface fits, or which layer the fault lives in. Naming the type first collapses the option set quickly.
Rehearse the pacing at least once under real time. Reading about it is not the same as feeling it.
The final week, and the day itself
In the last week, stop learning new material and start rehearsing. One full timed run early in the week, targeted work on whatever it exposes, a second timed run two days out, and a light day before.
Re-read your own error list rather than the syllabus. By this stage the marks you are still dropping live in patterns you keep repeating, not in content you have never encountered.
Logistics deserve an evening of their own, ideally earlier than the final week. On the day there are two failure modes. Rushing produces confident answers to a question that was not asked, which is expensive on a paper where the situational detail is the whole point. Over-reading produces invented complications: an item about which surface suits a task is not secretly about governance. Read once carefully, decide what is being asked, then evaluate.
If it goes wrong: the retake ladder
Decide your response to a fail now, while you are calm, rather than in the hour after a disappointing result.
The ladder is graduated. After a first unsuccessful attempt you wait 14 days. After a second, 30 days. After a third, 90 days. No more than four attempts are permitted in any rolling twelve months, and each costs $99. The waits compound in effect: three unsuccessful sittings puts more than four months on the clock before a fourth becomes available.
That structure argues strongly for treating the first attempt as real rather than as reconnaissance. The 14 days after a first fail is the most valuable window in the whole ladder, because your memory of the experience is fresh and the wait is short enough that momentum survives. Spend it on your two weakest domains by weight, not on a general re-read of everything.
If a second attempt also falls short, treat the 30-day wait as a signal to change method rather than volume. Another three hundred questions worked the same way tends to reproduce the same result. What is usually missing is not knowledge but the habit of committing to an answer before reading the options, and being able to articulate why each rejected option fails.
And if the ladder runs out, respect the constraint. Four attempts in a rolling year means a genuine pause, not a scheduling puzzle.
Common questions
What score do I need to pass CCAO-F?
720 on a scale from 100 to 1000. Anthropic does not publish a mapping from questions answered correctly to that scaled figure, so there is no honest way to state a raw percentage target. Treat any site quoting one as guessing, and prepare to clear the standard across all seven domains rather than to a numeric threshold you cannot verify.
How long should I prepare for CCAO-F?
There is no defensible single figure, and we are not going to invent one, because the honest answer depends entirely on how much real work you have done with Claude. Use a method instead of a number: take a timed diagnostic, look at where you land per domain, and keep studying until fresh questions in your two weakest weighted areas stop surprising you.
How much time do I get per question?
120 minutes for 60 questions, which averages two minutes each. Because every item counts the same regardless of which domain it came from, the efficient approach is to bank the ones you know quickly, flag anything that stalls you, and use the reserve at the end on the genuinely hard items rather than spending it early.
What happens if I fail CCAO-F?
You wait 14 days before a second attempt, 30 days before a third, and 90 days before a fourth, with a ceiling of four attempts in any rolling twelve-month period. Each attempt is $99. Are your practice questions taken from the real exam?
