Two choices carry most of the weight. The first is which part of the product to use: an ordinary chat, a Project, an artifact, a research session, web search, or extended thinking. Each exists because a different shape of work needs it, and the exam presents a professional whose situation quietly names one of them — a recurring task with reusable reference material, a single factual lookup with ninety seconds to spare, a board paper needing many sources and a defensible argument. The second is which model tier to use, where the trade is capability against speed and how quickly you consume your usage. Neither choice requires technical knowledge. Both require you to read a scenario and identify what the work actually demands, which is why this domain rewards people who have used the product for real work over people who have memorised a feature list.

Web search, extended thinking, and research

Web search suits a straightforward factual lookup — one or two searches, answered quickly, the right choice when a colleague asks what the current published guidance says and the meeting moves on in ninety seconds. Extended thinking gives a hard reasoning problem more room without fetching anything, so it fits analysis of material you already have: three years of departmental spend, an argument to work through. Research runs many searches over minutes and returns a report with citations, which is what a competitor briefing or funding landscape review needs. They are not ranked; they answer different questions.

The heaviest option is not the safest

Running a research session for a single fact you could have looked up is slow, consumes usage faster because many sources are retrieved, and returns a survey where you needed one line. Turning on extended thinking for a question about current guidance does not help, because reasoning time fetches nothing new; the answer will be better argued and just as out of date. Read the constraint in the stem — the ninety seconds, the usage limit, the material already attached — and let it select the lightest sufficient tool.

Model tiers as a matching problem

The tiers differ in how much reasoning they bring and how quickly they consume your usage. Haiku is the light, fast tier and suits mechanical, repetitive work: pulling a name, a date and a yes-or-no from ninety acknowledgement emails. Sonnet is the general-purpose default for most drafting, analysis and everyday work, and the right recommendation for someone whose job is a mix. Opus is the heavy reasoning tier, worth reserving for genuinely difficult analysis. Model names and versions change; the matching logic does not, and that is what the exam tests. The strongest tier does not make extraction more correct — only more expensive.

Projects, and the signal that you need one

A Project is a workspace with its own chats and its own knowledge. Reference material uploaded to a Project's knowledge is available to every chat started inside it, and the Project's instructions apply to those chats too. The exam's tell is repetition: someone opening a fresh chat each week and pasting the same style guide, org chart and terminology list is describing a Project-shaped problem, treating recurring work as unrelated one-offs. Note the boundary — that knowledge serves chats inside the Project, not conversations started outside it, and it is material you upload rather than something Claude goes and finds.

Artifacts, and when output should stand apart

An artifact is substantial, self-contained content that appears in its own panel beside the conversation rather than inline in the reply — a document, a checklist, a table you will keep working on. It supports versions, so you can iterate and move between them, and it can be published to share. That makes it the right home for a deliverable you will refine over several turns. It is not a container for reference material and does not carry source documents into future chats; that is what a Project's knowledge does. A two-sentence definition is a chat answer, not an artifact.

Where candidates go wrong

Trap 1 — 'Use the strongest model and you cannot go wrong'

The reasoning feels safe: heavier tier, better answer, one less thing to worry about. For a mechanical task repeated ninety times it is simply expensive. Pulling a name and a date has a correct answer the light tier reaches as reliably as the heavy one, and burning usage on it leaves you limited in the afternoon when the hard analysis arrives — the exam often plants that commitment in the stem. Candidates also assume the heavy tier removes the need to check the output. Tier affects capability, not the requirement to verify.

Trap 2 — 'Research is the thorough mode, so use it whenever accuracy matters'

Research is thorough for questions that need many sources synthesised. For a single lookup it is the wrong shape: slower, heavier on your limits, and it returns a survey of the field when what was wanted was one current, citable line before the discussion moves on. The related trap is expecting research to work when web search is unavailable. Research depends on searching; a session returning almost instantly with a general answer and no citations has not searched, and the fix is to check web search is available rather than rerun and hope.

Trap 3 — 'Extended thinking makes answers more accurate'

Extended thinking gives reasoning more room. Candidates translate that into a general accuracy setting and reach for it whenever an answer matters, including when the problem is that the information is out of date or was never supplied. Thinking harder about material you do not have does not produce it. If the gap is currency, the answer involves searching; if the gap is your own documents, the answer involves attaching them. Extended thinking earns its place when the material is present and the difficulty is in the analysis — and it can be combined with research when a task genuinely needs both wide sourcing and a properly reasoned conclusion.

Trap 4 — 'Make it an artifact so the reference material stays attached'

This distractor sounds plausible because artifacts do persist and can be revisited. But an artifact is a piece of output, not a knowledge store: it does not hold your style guide and terminology list for next week's draft, and starting a new chat from it does not bring your source documents along. The feature that keeps reference material available across many chats is a Project's knowledge. Candidates who blur the two lose marks in both directions — proposing an artifact where recurring context is needed, and a whole Project where someone wanted a document they could keep editing.

How to study this domain

Build a one-page decision table and rehearse it until it is automatic. Down one side: a single factual lookup, analysis of material I already have, a multi-source briefing, a recurring task with fixed reference material, a deliverable I will iterate on. Across the other: web search, extended thinking, research, a Project, an artifact. Nearly every question in this domain is one row of that table wrapped in a workplace scenario, and the scenario always contains the constraint that picks the row — the time available, the usage pressure, the documents already attached.

Then deliberately practise choosing down rather than up. Take five tasks you did this month and ask what the lightest sufficient option would have been. Do not memorise model version numbers; the lineup is renamed and extended over time and the exam is testing the matching logic, not the current roster. Know that one tier is built for fast, mechanical work, one is the everyday default, and one is reserved for hard reasoning, and know that consuming the heavy tier on light work is a real cost with a real consequence later in the day.
