CCAR-F or CCAO-F?
Both are Claude certifications, but they are written for different people. The guides are explicit about who each one excludes, which is usually the fastest way to rule one out.
CCAO-F
Professionals who use Claude as a productivity tool, rather than building with it.
Side by side
| CCAR-F | CCAO-F | |
|---|---|---|
| Questions | 60 | 60 |
| Time limit | 120 min | 120 min |
| Domains | 5 | 7 |
| Exam fee | $125 | $99 |
| Pass mark | 720 | 720 |
| Scenario-based | Yes | No |
Both are scored on the same 100–1000 scale and stay valid for 12 months. A failed attempt means waiting 14 days before the first retake, and the whole programme allows 4 attempts per rolling year.
How to rule one out
CCAO-F is not for Software developers building against APIs or designing agentic systems, and specialists in machine learning or advanced AI system design — that scope belongs to the Developer and Architect credentials.
CCAR-F is the more advanced sitting of the two. Note that the guides do not require the lower one first — neither certification is a prerequisite for the other, so you can sit whichever matches the work you actually do.
Where they overlap
Both blueprints cover 1 common subject:
- integration design
Shared subject does not mean shared difficulty. The same topic is tested at the depth each exam's audience works at, so preparation for one is not preparation for the other.
