How to Pass CCDV-F

A plan built on three numbers: 53 questions, 120 minutes, and a pass mark of 720 on a scale with no published conversion table.

Passing Claude Certified Developer – Foundations comes down to four decisions: what you study, how you practise, how you spend the two hours, and what you do if the first sitting does not go your way. This page takes each in turn, and every recommendation is anchored to a published figure rather than a feeling.

The planning advantage this exam gives you is its two-tier blueprint. Eight domains are subdivided into 25 named sub-skills, each carrying its own percentage of the whole paper. That level of detail lets you rank topics by expected marks instead of by unease, which is one of the largest improvements available to a revision plan. It also means a diagnostic result is actionable: a weak area maps onto a named sub-skill with a number attached, and the number tells you how much an hour there is worth.

The constraint to plan around is the clock. Fifty-three items and 120 minutes work out at about two minutes and fifteen seconds each, with no time to be spent twice. And the scoring model rules out a tactic it is natural to reach for: because the 720 pass mark is criterion-referenced with no published raw-to-scaled conversion, you cannot work out mid-exam how many items you can afford to lose. What follows is a method that does not depend on knowing that number.

The short version

  • Fifty-three items in 120 minutes averages about two minutes fifteen seconds each. Work at two minutes and you bank roughly 14 minutes.
  • Rank all 25 sub-skills by weight multiplied by how shaky you are, and study from the top of that list downwards.

Rank the 25 sub-skills by what they can win you

Start by turning the blueprint into a table you can act on. List all 25 sub-skills with their weights, then score yourself on each one: 0 if you are solid, 1 if it is patchy, 2 if you would be guessing. Multiply the score by the weight. Sort descending. That column is an estimate of the marks each topic could return, and it should drive your calendar.

The ordering it produces is often counter-intuitive, which is the point. Being shaky on MCP Server Development scores 2 by 2.1, giving 4.2. Being merely patchy on Software Engineering Foundations scores 1 by 7.4, giving 7.4. The topic that feels worse is worth a good deal less of your attention than the one you half-know, and instinct alone tends to get this backwards.

Rebuild the table after each practice session rather than trusting the first version. Self-assessment before you have answered any questions is guesswork; self-assessment after 60 or 80 attempted items is evidence. Two or three iterations in, the table stops moving much, and by then it is the most valuable page in your notes.

What a scaled 720 does and does not tell you

Scores are reported on a 100 to 1000 scale, and 720 is the bar. The scoring is criterion-referenced, which means you are being measured against a fixed standard rather than against other candidates, and no conversion from raw answers to scaled points is published for this exam.

Three consequences follow, and each one changes how you sit the paper.

First, never leave an item unanswered. With no published conversion there is no way to know what an omission costs, and an answered question you were unsure about can only help.

Second, stop keeping a mental tally. It is tempting to run a rolling count of the items you think you got wrong and to use it to decide how hard to push. The count cannot be converted into anything meaningful, and the attention it consumes is attention taken away from the question in front of you.

Third, treat a near miss as a near miss, nothing more precise. A scaled result below 720 does not translate into a specific number of questions. Read it as a signal to widen coverage, and let a fresh diagnostic tell you where.

Practise so that wrong answers teach you something

Answering questions is not the same as learning from them, and the difference is entirely in what you do after the answer is scored.

For every item you get wrong, and every item you got right while unsure, write down three things: which sub-skill it belongs to, what the correct reasoning was, and why the option you preferred was wrong. That third element is where most of the value hides. Distractors on a well-built exam are plausible for a reason, and understanding the reason inoculates you against a whole family of similar items.

Keep the log keyed by sub-skill name, so it merges directly with your ranking table. After a few sessions you will see clusters, and a cluster is a diagnosis rather than a list of accidents.

On material: practice mode costs nothing and runs 20 questions per sitting, as often as you like, and there are sample questions you can try without an account. Build up to the full 53 before exam day

Short drills teach content. Only a full-length run teaches you how you perform in the second hour of a two-hour paper, and that is the part which decides marginal passes.

Sit at least two complete simulations of 53 questions inside 120 minutes, uninterrupted, before the real thing. Do them at roughly the time of day your appointment is booked for. No pausing to look things up, because a paused run measures your knowledge rather than your exam performance, and you already know your knowledge is incomplete.

What to look at afterwards, in order: your accuracy in the final third compared to the first, whether any question ate more than five minutes, how many items you flagged and never returned to, and only then the score. The first three are process faults you can fix in a week. Score alone tells you very little at this stage.

If the second half of a run is noticeably weaker than the first, the fix is usually pacing rather than content. That is a happier diagnosis than it sounds, because pacing is quicker to correct than a gap in Applications and Integration.

Spending 120 minutes on 53 questions

The average available is about two minutes fifteen seconds per item. Working to that average exactly leaves you nothing in hand, so plan a two-minute working pace instead. Fifty-three items at two minutes is 106 minutes, banking roughly a quarter of an hour for the questions that genuinely need it and for a final sweep.

Use checkpoints rather than watching the clock continuously. At two minutes an item you should have finished 15 questions by the 30-minute mark, 30 by the hour, and 45 by 90 minutes, which leaves half an hour for the last eight plus review. If you are behind at a checkpoint, correct across the next block rather than trying to claw it back on the next single question.

The habit that saves the most time is the cheapest: when an item is still opaque after a minute, choose the best available option, flag it, and move. An item you have banked an answer for costs you nothing to revisit, while an item you are still staring at is costing you the two questions further down the paper that you would have got right.

The last week

The final week is for consolidation, not for new topics. Opening a fresh area at this point mostly produces the feeling of having studied.

Spend the bulk of it on two things. First, the twelve sub-skills weighted under 3% each, which together are 30.2% of the exam and are the easiest part of it to postpone. They are small enough to revise quickly and numerous enough to matter. Second, your error log, re-drilled until the clusters in it are gone.

Do one full-length timed run early in the week, not the day before. A weak result 24 hours out damages your sitting more than the practice helps it.

One administrative item belongs here too. If your appointment needs moving, changes have to be made at least 24 hours in advance, so confirm the date and time while you still have the option. Then close the books. The evening before is better spent away from the material than adding one more pass over a domain you have already covered four times.

If the first attempt does not go your way

An unsuccessful attempt puts 14 days between you and the next one. After a second it becomes 30 days, after a third 90, and the cap is four attempts within any rolling 12 months, with the fee payable each time.

That ladder should change your behaviour in two ways. Before your first sitting, it is the argument against treating an attempt as reconnaissance: a wasted try costs $125 and a fortnight. After an unsuccessful attempt, it is a schedule. Fourteen days is enough to re-run the largest block of the blueprint properly, so use it that way rather than re-reading everything thinly.

Rebuild the ranking table first, honestly, then spend the fortnight on the top rows and one full-length timed run near the end. Repeating the preparation that already fell short is the easiest way to burn a second attempt.

One more interaction worth planning around: the credential is valid for 12 months, and the attempt cap runs over a rolling 12 months too. Attempts spread across most of a year leave you with a credential and not much of a year to use it in.

How long do I get per question on CCDV-F?
